"I've Been Doing Pelvic Floor Exercises for Months. Why Am I Still Having Symptoms?"

One of the most common things I hear from women during an initial assessment is:

"I've been doing my pelvic floor exercises, but nothing seems to be changing."

Sometimes they've been doing exercises for weeks. Sometimes months. Occasionally years.

They're understandably frustrated.

If you've been putting the effort in but are still experiencing leaking, heaviness, pelvic pain, urgency, or a feeling that something just isn't right, it may be worth considering that pelvic floor strength isn't the whole story.

Pelvic Floor Symptoms Are Often More Complex Than Weakness

Many women assume that pelvic floor symptoms automatically mean they need to do more Kegels.

In reality, symptoms can be influenced by a number of factors, including:

  • Pelvic floor tension or overactivity

  • Breathing patterns

  • Pressure management

  • Core coordination

  • Movement strategies

  • Exercise habits

  • Bowel and bladder function

  • Pregnancy, birth or menopause-related changes

This is why two women with very similar symptoms may require completely different rehabilitation approaches.

Generic Advice Has Its Limits

The internet is full of pelvic floor advice.

Some of it is excellent. Some of it is confusing. Much of it isn't tailored to your specific situation.

One of my clients described not wanting to spend weeks following a plan that wasn't specifically going to help her.

That is exactly why assessment matters.

Before deciding what your body needs, it helps to understand what is actually contributing to your symptoms.

Why Assessment Is Only the First Step

Assessment helps us understand:

  • What symptoms you're experiencing

  • When they occur

  • What may be contributing to them

  • How your body responds to movement and daily activities

But meaningful change rarely happens because of information alone.

Just like any other form of rehabilitation, improvement usually happens progressively over time.

The goal is not simply to understand your symptoms.

The goal is to improve them.

A Personalised Rehabilitation Approach

Every woman who attends The Pelvic Floor Clinic receives individual recommendations based on her assessment findings.

Rather than relying on generic exercises, rehabilitation is tailored to your symptoms, goals and lifestyle.

Whether your goal is returning to running, lifting your children confidently, enjoying intimacy without discomfort, or simply getting through the day without constantly thinking about your pelvic floor, rehabilitation should be designed around what matters to you.

You Don't Have to Work It Out Alone

If you've been trying to manage symptoms on your own and aren't seeing the progress you'd hoped for, it may be time to stop guessing.

A specialist assessment can help identify what's contributing to your symptoms and create a clear rehabilitation plan designed specifically for you.

Because sometimes the problem isn't that you're not trying hard enough.

It's that your body needs a different approach.
